Look Left! Look Left!

When and why did you guys start playing together?

Well it all happened by chance. I got asked to sing for a band in assembly when I was 13. This was with my friend called Rich and Matt (now our guitarist). Matt hurt his hand the day before the assembly. And Sam was the only other person who knew what to play for the assembly. So he filled in for us and everything went well. After that Barry (now our drummer) asked me to start a band with him and Sam so we did, and it just grew from there.

Where did you get the name 'Look Left! Look Left!' from?

We were thinking of band names because we didn't like the one we had before "Look Left! Look Left!" which was "The Missing Instinct" and I thought of "Look Left! Look Right!" but I found that quite a few bands had that name so Sam had the idea of "Look Left! Look Left!" and we all liked it

If you could start your own religion and write 3 commandments, what would the religion be called and what would the commandments be?

the religion would be called "Leftism" . You would have to always sleep on the left side of the bed. You can only look left when your crossing a road. Listen to our music for at least 6 hours a day, even if you throw up. Keep listening!

If you could perform live or record with any famous musician, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

That would probably have to be You Me At 6. They are my favourite band at the moment. This is mainly because they are such an awesome band live, so to play with them would just be an amazing experience.

If you could go back in time, what band/song/album would you erase from history?

I would erase the album "The Joshua Tree" by U2 because my parents named me after that album. So it would be pretty sweet having another name because the name Josh is too common these days.

How do you go about writing a song?

Well I will be on my guitar just playing around with it. Then I'll write riffs, if I like any of them I'll keep it and turn it into a really rough version of a song. I will take it to band practise where will all just mess around with it/improve it till we have a song we like. Its mostly Sam who writes the lead parts though. I'll write lyrics usually whilst I'm playing it by myself

Who are your main influences, and how have they affected your playing style?

Well since I was about 8 my hero had always been Tom Delonge from blink 182 and they were always my favourite band until they split up and I started listening to more local bands. At the moment my main influences are "You Me At 6" and "Kill The Arcade" because I've been listening to them for a few years and recently they've started getting a lot bigger and are on Kerrang and such. Which is awesome!

What's the strangest/coolest thing a fan has ever thrown at you while you were on stage?

That's easy. At our last gig one of our fans threw a massive pair of glasses at us whilst we were playing expecting me to wear them. But I didn't want to ruin them!

Explain briefly what the song "Party after prom" is about please :]

Well basically, it's a song just to make you happy. It's literally just about having fun, being with your mates, having a laugh. Happy stuff!

When you die, what one thing would you like to be remembered for?

I'd like to make a difference to people's lives and I'd very much like to do that by writing music. So if we write a really good song and that completely changes a person (in a good way). Then that would just be awesome to know that I helped do that.

Any final comments?
