Fake The Attack (Not my picture..unfortunately!)

The Roger Morris centre in Basingstoke was last night's venue to an amazing gig organized by Killer Cake Records. Gareth had asked me a couple of weeks in advance if I would like to do an interview with Fake The Attack, and of course I accepted. As we sat on the grass chatting it became apparent that these guys love what they're doing, and are also really cool people, although only three of them were there. They were only too happy to answer my questions…

When and why did you start playing together?

About five years ago Callum (Heffy; Guitar/Vox) and his brother James (Drums) started jamming together, playing covers with Guy and their old guitarist for about two years. Matt (Thorp; Bass) joined them, and they continued playing covers. About this time last year they wrote their first song. On February 13th of this year, they played their first gig outside of school, at Harriet. (?) It was at this first gig that they were approached by Killer Cake Records and asked to sign to the label, which they did. This is only their twelfth or thirteenth gig.

Who are your main influences and how have they affected your playing style?

Blur, Oasis, Blink 182, Green Day, Aiden, MCR, and Machine Head.

If you could perform live or record with any famous musician/band, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

Bowling For Soup, Aiden, Fall Out Boy, Angels and Airwaves.

Where did you get the name 'Fake The Attack' from?

They were originally named 'Chase Plane', but during recording they decided they would need a better name, so they pulled out a space dictionary and looked through, looking for random words and sticking them together. They came out with 'My Divine Action' but once again, this name didn't last long. They went on a website which randomized words and put them together to create band names, and they came up with Frog The Attack, but thought that sounded bad, so they changed it to Fake.

What has been your favourite venue/gig you've played to date and why?

The Agincourt (Camberley), YPod (Woking) and Harriet, where Guy was pulled by the feet off stage by a kid in the crowd.

Explain briefly what the song 'Car Commercial' is about please :]

Callum was putting together a GCSE disco piece and he came up with some funky techno tunes, he gave them to James and asked if he wanted to drum over it, so he did.

What is the strangest/coolest thing a fan has ever thrown at you while you were on stage?

Some kid in Fleet gave Matt a hat, which he wore for a couple of songs then gave back. James' drumsticks have hit Callum in the head on a number of occasions, and they throw glow sticks and beach balls out into the crowd, so they're often thrown back.

Any Final Comments?

They Hope the band goes far, and they're going on tour with A sometime in the not so distant future. They hope to play 'Ripcurl Unleashed' (Music Festival in Cornwall) next year.
