Although I have never really spoken to the boys from Bad Day? properly, their responses to our questions were somewhat...unique...and did exactly the job the interviews are meant to- to provide and insight into what the bands are like as individuals. Bad Day?'s lively version of indie pop rock is full of energy and power, and the quality of their recordings is rather mint. Look out for them at their England gigs in September.

When and why did you guys start playing together?

Me and Daniel could play drums and guitar and liked the idea of being in a band so we played together for a while with a revolving door of guitarists and bassists until we found Nathan and Jonny. So the current line-ups only been together about 3 months!

Where did you get the name 'Bad Day?' from?

Quote from Dumb and Dumber…the woman in the bar asks Lloyd “Bad Day huh?” and we’re both huge fans of the movie.

If you could start your own religion and write 3 commandments, what would the religion be called and what would the commandments be?

Nathan: Thou must have long hair, like Nathan!
Thou must like Red Hot Chilis
Thou must never listen to Sean
Sean: Thou shalt ignore all comments made by Nathan
Nathan: Sean is an asshole!
Sean: Thou shalt beat Nathan with blunt objects regularly! These aren’t really my commandments, more retaliations to Nathans stupid comments!
All : Thou shalt not listen to Nu rave. Nu rave, new waste of time.

If you could perform live or record with any famous musician, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

Nathan: John Frusciante, he is a dreamboat!
Jonny: Jeff Buckley
Sean: Got to be Kris Roe of the Ataris…legend.
Tully: Jim Morrison

If you could go back in time, what band/song/album would you erase from history?

Jonny :Whats the story morning glory
Sean:
Tully: Busted, the band, the albums, everything.
Nathan: Same as T.

How do you go about writing a song?

One of us comes with a guitar riff and we’ll all work around it rather than one person writing a whole song. Then we’ll practice it and Sean will write the lyrics for it.

Who are your main influences, and how have they affected your playing style?

Tully: Kasabian’s drummer and Taylor Hawkins. I don’t know how they affect my style
Jonny: Jonny Greenewood, Josh Homme for their use of effects.
Nathan: John Frusciante, he really is a dreamboat! No foolin’! (Laughs)
Sean: Lyrically Kris Roe or Robert Smith because they can write catchy songs but still include lyrics with depth. Vocally it would be them again… and Patrick Stump! Because he’s one of the only artists in modern music to be a talented singer and succeed. People like Kate Nash are ruining what people think are good vocalists.

What do you write songs about? Is it just what's going on in your lives at the time, or do you aim to write about a certain thing?

Usually whats going in my own life…but I disguise it a bit. I hate lyrics that are overly simple all the time. I like writing stories as well but basing the events in the songs around things that happen to me. It’s kinda hard to explain!

You're currently signed to Killer Cake Records, how has this affected the way you do things, if at all? (i.e. are people acting differently around you, are you changing the way you play/write etc)

Nothings really changed yet…it probably will though!

Finish the following statements:

"You know you've made it when…"

Jonny : You don’t need a job.
Nathan: You can afford all the fudge in the world!
Tully: When you’re headlining Glastonbury
Nathan: With a stage covered in fudge!
Tully : Wearing a jacket made of fudge money
Sean: When I can build a palace of fudge for all my (non-existent) hoe’s.

"It'll be time to pack up the gear for good when…"

Nathan: The fudge runs out.
Jonny: Kerrang gives you a 5 star review.
Sean: Nathan loses his hair and thus the bands sex appeal.
Tully: When you can’t afford Tesco Value Ready meals.

"I'll never forget the first time I…"

Tully : Jobbied
Nathan: Covered myself in fudge…or saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Sean: Heard The Ataris/The Cure/Wheatus

If you could create the "ultimate super-group" with anyone from any band, dead or alive, who would you have in it?

Nathan : Dave Grohl- Drums, Jimi Hendrix on guitar, John Frusciante – Rhythm guitar, Flea- bass and Kurt Cobain singing. Daniel Tully as groupie.
Tully: Taylor Hawkins- Drums, Jim Morrison – vocals, Mani- bass, Jimi Hendrix on guitar.
Jonny: Jeff Buckley –vocals, John Mayer – guitar, Carlos D – Bass, John Bonham- Drums.
Sean: Kris Roe- guitar /vocals, Robert guitar/vocals, Patrick Stump- guitar/vocals, Ben Folds-Piano/vocals, Benjamin Gibbard – bass/vocals/percussion, Stewart Copeland – Drums.

What's the strangest/coolest thing a fan has ever thrown at you while you were on stage?

Sean and Tully : At an early gig someone flew a remote control blimp on stage…

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your natural life, which song would it be and why?

Nathan: Under the bridge – Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Jonny: Dead Prez – Hip Hop
Sean : A Letter To Elise by The Cure…or Looking back on Today by the Ataris
Tully : I would get sick of everything!

If you could play any festival/concert/venue in the world, where would it be and why?

Jonny and Sean : Barrowlands
Tully and Nathan : Glastonbury

Which would you rather have; all the money in the world but no music, or all the music you could play but only enough money to survive?

All : 2nd one
Nathan: But you could sell all the music for money…

What has been your favourite gig/venue you've played to date, and why?

All : Cathouse

Explain briefly what the song 'Tell Me Anything' is about please :]

Someone I used to be very close to…she wasn’t really doing that well and instead of helping her and comforting her I merely ignored her. I realised it was a horrible thing to do…so I wrote the song as an apology and thankfully she liked it! I’m better at explaining songs in person for some reason…

What do you think of the current state of UK radio and the live/local music scene?

Sean: It’s good…but some “music” on the radio just now is appalling.
Tully : It could be a lot worse though.

Any other new bands and/or new albums that you would recommend checking out?

Overcry are pretty good...
www.myspace.com/overcry

What have been the most memorable gigs so far - both good and bad...?

Sean and Tully and Nathan: Soundhaus…terrible venue, there are parachutes on the ceiling to keep the heat in, and our old guitarist played so terrible we had to chuck him out…

What do you think on the subject of Gareth's hatred for ginger cats?

Tully : That’s the kind of cat I would get if I was getting one!
Jonny: I’m more concerned about him hating Telecasters…
Nathan : A cats a cat fool!
Sean : True dat homeboy!

Any Final Comments?

Lets make love!
